Featured Artist Profile: DJ KWE
She's an award-winning DJ, writer, producer, entrepreneur and a professional voice talent. Crystal, aka "DJ Kwe" is the embodiment of creativity and success. Born in North Vancouver, B.C., DJ Kwe is Métis nation and is known for creating traditional treasures using contemporary measures. In the summer of 2004, M'shko dayn Waashk Bishikii Kwe (which means "Prairie Sage Buffalo Woman) -"DJ Kwe" and was selected to represent the Nation of Canada in a battle of DJs from Canada, the USA, and the UK. She captured the WIN and was featured in local newspapers and radio. Kwe has compiled, mixed and released 12 non-stop CD mixes, showcasing her nine years as a professional DJ and the vast knowledge she has absorbed during a decade of diligently following the music industry.
Kwe was featured on Canada's national Music television Station, Much Music, in celebration of National Aboriginal Day. She interviewed as one of the few female Aboriginal DJs in Canada. Her visionary musical ways are leading to a brand new genre that fuses traditional singing, drumming, electronic sounds and instruments. In 2006, she released her first CD of Aboriginal House Music/Original Production called “The Electronic Drum” to the world promoting her producing, writing and voicing skills. She is now going mainstream with her musical message of hope and harmony as she DJ’s for youth conferences, corporate events and award galas like the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards 2007. One of her top notable performances was for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games where she showcased her music composition, sound design and DJ skills for Dorothy Grant, Pam Baker and Four Host First Nations. Her effort was ground breaking as many leaders in the native community acknowledged her vision as inspirational.
KWE the Entrepreneur
In 2003, Crystal Favel aka DJ Kwe founded her own multimedia production company, “Urban Indian Productions Inc.,” in the hopes to inspire the world. She has worked with the HR McMillan Space Centre as a Music Producer for the “Sky Stories” film and the project was launched in September 2007 to inspire students to learn more about Aboriginal history. Crystal has worked with music producers from Romania, Portugal, Brazil, Paris, USA and Canada as she voices her teachings to share with the world for over five years. Her 20 years of multimedia experience, 10 years youth leadership experience, awards, certificates and milestones validate her mission and positive attitude.
Kwe was a featured artist and wrote an article that was published in Spirit Magazine’s music issue, which celebrated Aboriginal Artists. She was also featured on the reality TV show “Diva on a Dime” for Global Prime Network and completely changed her look to match her new style. Her talents have been recognized by the Spirit of Aboriginal Youth Magazine, Third Space, AfroToronto, Windspeaker and she has been deemed as “Blazing a Trail” by the Aboriginal Business Quarterly. Urban Indian Productions Inc. was showcased at the ACCESS Aboriginal Business Forum because of Crystal’s ability to make a sustainable business out of healing and inspiration. Mrs. Favel is the epitome of resilience, respect and overachievement as she shares her mantra across the world, “Believe In Yourself!”
